My family (18 years and older) does a white elephant gift exchange every year. The rules are each adult has to purchase one gift and it can't cost more than $15.00. It can be anything from a store or even a garage sale; you never know what will show up. All gifts are placed in a single pile. Then a deck of cards is shuffled and everyone picks one card. The highest card (Ace) goes first; they pick any gift from the pile of gifts. Once they pick the gift, they open it for everyone to see. The next highest card has the choice of taking an opened gift or picking from the pile. If they take someone?s already opened gift, the person who had a gift taken from them has to pick and open a gift from the pile again, they can also take someone else's opened gift. Play continues until all gifts have been opened, this game gets real funny when people try to ditch their white elephants (the gifts that suck). We always end up laughing our butts off near the end; it?s a lot of fun. We?ve done this for about 20 years and each year is a blast.

cntrymusic.rocks:  I did play that game at a work Christmas party one year, it was a lot of fun. It would be really fun with a big family. We'll only have 8 people total at our house on Christmas. Maybe we could do 2 gifts each to make it more fun. We normally don't exchange gifts but that would be fun. We haven't had any Christmas traditions other than playing cards or games on holidays when we get together. Thanks for your idea.

Cali-Gal:  The White Elephant sounds really fun! Our family gets together and plays Bingo. We get lots of small items from the Bath and Body Shoppe and other stores to use as prizes. Once all the prizes are gone, we then proceed to play Poker with toothpicks. Everyone brings a box of unopened toothpicks (250 count). The winner gets to take home ALL of the fruitcakes that were given as gifts for that year.
